Standup Comedy Tokyo - April 6 / 7 2016
Just bringing the blog back to life to promote some proper standup comedy coming to Tokyo this week at a local pub called Good Heaven's. British Comedian Phil Wang will be putting on two shows on April 6th and 7th. More details here at Standup Tokyo.

Improv Comedy in Tokyo: Pirates of Tokyo Bay
I am always on the lookout for Comedy shows to go to and, thanks to a review in the Japan Times I discovered some Improv Comedy happening a pub called 'What the Dickens' in Ebisu.
A group calling themselves the Pirates of Tokyo did a show on Oct 16th 2011
Doors opened at :7:00pm and the show started at 7:30 Entrance was 1500 Yen which included one free drink. Food was available.
Location : "What the Dickens" , 1-13-3 EBISU-NISHI SHIBUYA-KU TOKYO. 3 minutes walk from Ebisu station, JR Yamanote line and Hibiya subway line.
If you have ever seen the TV show "Who's line is it anyway" then you'll know the kind of thing.

The show was in both English and Japanese. I was interested to see how they would handle that. In fact it was very well done with some games all in English, some all in Japanese, and some in a mixture with some translations.
The show is divided in to a number of different games.
I really enjoyed the evening and I am looking forward to their next show they hope to put some time in December. I'll be posting details here when I hear about it.

Tomo Today
We all know Web 2.0 is where it's at. FaceBook, Mixi, Myspace and all the other Social Networking Sites are the hottest thing. Building your network, adding friends and followers to all the different site can become a full time job.

Comedy in Tokyo
Sadly, The Punchline Comedy Club has been unable to continue bringing well known comedians to Tokyo after their major sponsor Virgin Atlantic pulled out in September 2008 and no other sponsors could be found.
However, all is not lost. To continue to get my fix of comedy, there are some alternatives that I discovered, thanks once again to Alan at lemonsoju.
Coming up this Tuesday 17th February the Tokyo Cynics present: "An Evening of Stand Up" at The Hobgoblin in Shibuya.
Performers to be announced.
Doors open: 7 PM
Show starts: 9 PM
Show ends: 10 to 10:30 PM
Admission: FREE! ... but you are asked to buy at least one drink at the bar.
The Tokyo Comedy Store Crocodile Show provides live stand-up and improv comedy in English on the fourth Friday of the month at The Crocodile in Shibuya. The next show coming up is on 27th Feb.
Act One feature's Tokyo's best stand-ups and special guests. In Act Two the improv comedy group, Spontaneous Confusion, create always-new hilarious scenes, songs and musicals based on your suggestions.
Doors open at 7:30. Food is served all night with a full menu including pizza, pasta, dinner plates and, so it says on their website, crocodile. Remember FFF: Fourth Friday Funny!
And finally, as a one off event to celebrate their 60th anniversary, The British Chamber of Commerce in Tokyo presents : "Whose Line is it Anyway". On Friday 13th March 2009. It starts at 19:15, but it's a little bit more pricey than the others. A seat will set you back 18,000 Yen at the The Conrad Tokyo. However that does include :
* A Best of British Menu from the Michelin-starred Gordon Ramsay
* Jazz by the House Band
* Hip-hop entertainment by the Hana Enterprises Dance School
* By special arrangement with the Punchline Comedy Club, direct from London, the all-star cast of “Whose Line is it Anyway?” offering the very best of improvised comedy.
I'll have to check my financial situation at the end of the week to see if I can afford that one.

Tokyo Players: NY Style Comedy
I just got back from the Punchline comedy night at Pizza Express that I mentioned before. It was an excellent night of stand-up comedy at its best. Mandy Night was wickedly abusive to many members of the audience. The lawyer in the front row certainly got a lot of attention from her and I wish I could have seen the expression on the young lad who was with his parents when she was trying to embarass him with her desire for young men. Tommy Campbell had me spilling my drink with his story about the dog and a condom. Carey (from the Dairy) Marx, with his teddy bear named Parsnip, told some cracking jokes and stories of a seriously non PC nature.
It's only now, after I revisited their website, that I notice that it is run in association with The Comedy Store London which explains why it felt so much like being back in England. That, and the fact that 99% of the audience were expats.
The Japan Times this morning was advertising some more comedy, this time with more of an American flavour. The Tokyo Players are presenting a comedy play entitled "The Plaza Suite" which sounds very good. The newspaper is running a lottery to win a pair of tickets. Just go to this page and use the password "comedy" before Feb 22nd. The shows are on Feb 29th, March 1st and March 2nd at the Akasaka V Theater which is a 3-minute walk from Akasaka Station on the Chiyoda Line. Tickets are ¥4,000 for adults. For more information and bookings, go to www.tokyoplayers.org.
Meanwhile in Korea, not comedy but music, I spotted Mark Russell of Korea Pop Wars has started the Korea Gig Guide so that you can find out what's going on in the Korean live music scene. Well done Mark, it looks as if it's off to a great start with plenty of gigs on the calendar.

Naked Korean News and Comedy too
The Japan Times today carries the news that Naked News (NSFW) is launching a Korean version of its popular service. ( The story does not seem to be on their website, and their advanced search option has not been updated to include 2008 so here's the story from Foxnews.com )
In my last post on Korean blogs I mentioned The Yangpa blog without having visited it recently. When I got around to checking it, I discovered that blog has stopped posting, but The Original Yangpa Blog has started posting again. So, update your bookmarks, blog links and news readers to point to the new site to read more about how the new trans Korea canal will sponsored by Chanel:
and the extra E2 visa requirements demanded by some Korean provinces for teachers, including the One minute breath holding requirement.
Another update is that Joe Mondello, previously at Paintroller, has returned to Korea to study and moved his blog from blogger.com to wordpress Joshing Gnome
Another piece of good news for those with Apple MACs is that News Net Wire, the RSS reader, is now available for free. I switched to using Google News reader when my license ran out after the first year because I was planning to use a PC, but moving back to News Net Wire is a big improvement on Google.

Standup Comedy in Seoul : Nov 11.
A few months ago we enjoyed the first of BH Production's 'Standup Comedy nights'. Thanks to being on their mailing list I can tell you that in November they are presenting another night of comedy at the B1 Lounge in Itaewon.
Don't miss Bryan Erwin and Nathan Timmel for an outstanding night of comedy. Bryan Erwin and Nathan Timmel, two professional comedians in the United States, are being brought over to Korea for a one night only show in Itaewon.
Bryan Erwin's comedic appeal is universally apparent: audiences everywhere can identify with his take on life, or as he puts it, "an ongoing series of awkward, uncomfortable moments." His satirical style has been featured at legendary comedy clubs such as the Comedy Store, the Improv, and the Laugh Factory.
Nathan Timmel is known for his edgy, observational humour unmercifully directed at contemporary culture and politics. Nathan has entertained audiences at numerous comedy clubs around the world, and looks forward to unleashing his act on a Seoul audience for the first time.

Stephen Colbert laughs at the Japanese
Just so that the Koreans do not get the idea that Stephen Colbert only makes fun of them, here he is on a new restaurant in Tokyo :
It's not a place I will be visiting soon.
